Objectives

A diverse community of viruses are hosted by Heterobasidion spp. The possibilities for virocontrol of H. annosum is studied in subproject 1. The potential of a recently found virus, which slows down the growth of Heterobasidion considerably, will be evaluated by analyzing its effect on the growth rate, decaying efficiency, and infection capability of H. annosum. The first observation of H. annosum on pines in southern Ostrobothnia was made in 2006. After that, observations have been made in e.g. Isokyrö, Vähäkyrö, Ylistaro, Kuortane, Kauhajoki and Lapua. Typical sites with infection are fertile 10-15 year old Scots pine stands. The purpose of the subproject 2 is to figure out the reasons for the recent findings and to find out means to restrict further dispersal. This subproject will be conducted in co-operation with the local forestry society. The distribution and frequency of Heterobasidion parviporum and H. annosum in Finland is poorly known. Especially from North Finland scant knowledge exists. In subproject 3 the distribution and frequency of these fungi is invented from Kainuu, northern Pohjanmaa and southern Lappi. The results of this inventory will be supplemented with Heterobasidion –data obtained from recent National Forest Inventories (NFI). Observations of Heterobasidion in the NFI will be evaluated by field controls.
