Research Programme: Renewing wood product value chains and timber procurement solutions

Objectives

In Finland timber construction is has a strong competitive position in single-family and terraced houses, and has improved its position in multi-storey buildings. Cost and eco-efficient wood products could further enhance competitiveness of timber construction. However, changes in use of wood in construction sector value chains have been slow, and environmental performance is not yet a decision criterion in construction. From the point of view of sustainable development, timber multi-storey houses offer both ecologically sustainable housing and have a positive impact on the entire wood industry value chain.

The study aims to analyse and support green (timber) construction by addressing ecological and social aspects of sustainable development, by developing and improving measures for timber construction competences, and by promoting regional cooperation. The goal is to analyse construction systems, which differ in terms of wood content, in terms of their total costs, and how these systems affect use of logs, stumpage prices, and wood industry profits and employment rates.

The project also evaluates the impact of risks and uncertainties, associated with industrial manufacturing of wood products, on development of long-lasting competitive advantages in value networks. Nordic comparisons of timber construction support the adoption of best practices. The project is closely connected with projects examining consumers’ attitudes and values related to use of wood in housing.
