Metla Project 3568

EU 2020 - Scenarios for the demand and supply of wood-based energy and their impacts on the forest sector in Europe

[  Suomeksi  |  Objectives  |  Project leader  |  Publications  |  Metla Research  ]

Duration: 2012-2014
Research Programme: ForestEnergy2020

Objectives

The project provides information on the market prospects for the forest biomass and the commodities produced from it in a European and national level. The use of forest biomass as raw material in the forest industries and as fuel feedstock in the energy production are accounted for simultaneously. Regarding the commodities in the energy sector, we consider new products, such as liquid biofuels, on the side of traditional wood fuels used in heat and power generation. The project adds knowledge on how the forest industry adapts to the tightening competition over the wood with the energy sector. Also, it examines the boundary conditions related to the policies and to the developments in the forest industries and in the international trade in forest products required in order to achieve the goals set on the use of wood based energy in the EU and nationally. Accounting for the development of the use of the forest resources, the results of the project will also set ground for evaluating the impacts of the use of wood based energy on climate.
