Metla Project 3557
The effects of timber usage, silvicultural practices and ownership on the regional cutting possibilities and on the development of forest resources
Duration: 2012-2016
Research Programme: Future forests and forest management
Objectives
The Finnish forest sector is undergoing strong transitions: the traditional forest industry is reducing its production and the energy production based on wood is expanding, while the shifts of the goals of forest ownership and the whole society are affecting on the usage of forests. In this research the Finnish forest management planning tool MELA is furnished and used with new stand treatment alternatives and the more 'up-to-date' goals of the ownership. The results of the project will be improved solutions for long term projections of regional cutting possibilities and the development of forest resources e.g. for the processes of the national and regional forest programmes and for the decision making of the production capacities of the forest industry. Further the work will improve the extension of research results (models) to practical forestry and will also improve the usage of the MELA program for practical forest management planning purposes.
