Duration: 2011-2015
Research project group: Distinct projects - Information reserves on forestry and the forest environment

Objectives

The forest inventory research began in Finland in the beginning of the 20th century. This research project continues the methodological development. It includes the research and planning of field sampling design, development of the models needed in an inventory, as well as the research and development of methods for computing the inventory results both from pure field data and from combined field data and remote sensing data. The ultimate goal is to develop an inventory method of a new generation that produces information for different spatial scale, and to maintain world-class forest inventory knowledge. The methods are employed in the Finnish national forest inventory, and are applicable in the inventories of the other countries worldwide. The project produces and publishes forest resource information for municipality level using multi-source information, as well as covering thematic map form predictions. The project develops methods for UN LULUCF greenhouse gas reporting and takes care of the practical reporting including the requirements of Kyoto protocol.
