The effect of soil preparation and fertilisation on forest soil and tree stand

Objectives

The objective of this project to provide information of the ecological basis of sustainable forest production and forestry practises. In the sub-project 1 we determine effects of forest management (fast- and slow-release fertilizers, wood ash fertilization, liming, soil preparation, prescribed burning, harvesting and slash removal) on soil properties, stand nutrient status, growth and nutrient dynamics, and the maintenance of soil fertility in intensively managed stands. The aim of the sub-project 2 is to define the rate of weathering under different forestry operations and estimate the amount of annual weathering of different elements. In the sub-project 3 we define the biodiversity of soil animals after different forestry practises and the role of soil animals in decomposition and release of nutrients. In the sub-project 4 we make studies of the different possibilities to measure in the NFI network the annual changes in forest soil carbon storage. In the sub-projects 5 and 6 related to the sentrifugation method applications and the effects of tree species on soil properties we finalize the reporting of the results of these projects.
