Objectives

The project includes three subprojects. The first subproject concerns the basis for growth of prefabricated wooden house manufacturing enterprises. The project will seek to identify those factors that create the pre-conditions for sustainable growth. Attention will be paid to the role of business strategy, the significance of resource management and the role of networking. Businesses that have grown through exporting will also be given special attention. The study will seek to determine what types of firms are best able to withstand the disturbances of business cycles and what kind of survival strategies are involve, as well as assessing what measures are required to help businesses achieve resilience and growth.

The first part of the second subproject concerns the business development projections on prefabricated timber house manufacturing for business to business residential construction value chains. The major research issues of the subproject are a) customer preferences and the wood value articulation and appreciation factors in their background, b) the critical factors behind the profitability and feasibility of timber component and module prefabrication alternatives for BtoB residential construction value networks and c) impacts from new designing and planning technologies used in BtoB residential construction. The second future business opportunities for timber house and other woodworking industry SMEs in NW Russian BtoB residential house construction. The dependence of business and its profitability on customer preferences, contracting in the value chain formation and institutional infrastructure are the major research topics.
