Metla Project 3529
Nature and forest based tourism as a business opportunity
Duration: 2010-2012
Research Programme: Wellbeing from forests
Objectives
Nature- and forest based tourism are important factors in improving people's well-being. A steady increase in such tourism creates business opportunities for those enterprises offering recreational and other tourism-oriented services. These diverse enterprises form a heterogenic segment of the rural economy that is not well understood. This project aims to define the nature-based tourism segment and its limits, following which, the significance and extent of enterprise activity in the segment, its characteristics and the nature of the services provided will be examined. The project will also seek to identify the success factors of enterprises in the segment, as well as identifying the principal factors that stimulate or hinder enterprise growth. The development of the segment will create opportunities for new enterprises, which in turn will further diversify the use of forests, advance people's well-being, and stimulate the rural economy.
