Duration: 2009-2012   Keywords: bioenergy, carbon sink, climate change, economic models, emission trading, forest sector, land use, policy instruments, substitution, timber markets
Research Programme: Functioning of forest ecosystems and use of forest resources in changing climate

Objectives

The project will assess the impacts of forest, agriculture, climate, energy and other associated land use policies on the LULUCF sector with a particular emphasis on the forest sector. Employing quantitative models, we assess the efficiency of various land use policies and their combinations in the climate change mitigation and examine their trade-offs and co-benefits with other ecological (such as biodiversity) and socio-economic (e.g. employment and competitiveness) goals. Geographically explicit biophysical models together with an integrated cluster of economic land use models will be coupled with regional climate models. Bioenergy sources and pathways will be assessed in combination with land use in forestry and agriculture in a consistent manner. The role of distribution and pressures from socioeconomic drivers will also be assessed. The robustness of response strategies to extreme events will further be assessed with risk and uncertainty augmented sectoral or enterprise models. The research will be carried out in the international CC-TAME consortium. The Metla project will further act as an interface of the consortium with the Finnish audience deepening and disseminating the overall results for the benefit of the domestic policy-making.
