Metla Project 3525
Decision support contributing to forest biodiversity
Duration: 2009-2012
Keywords: Adaptive planning, biodiversity, decision support, non-industrial private forest owners, social impact assessment
Research project group: The impacts and policy instruments of the Forest Biodiversity Programme for Southern Finland (METSO 2008-2016).
Objectives
The research project aims at developing decision support that relates to protection of forest biodiversity. For that, family forest owners are surveyed and inquired after their practical decision problems as well as related decision aid and information needs. Another survey study examines the structure and functioning of owners’ social networks that associate with the decision making concerning biodiversity protection contracts. The results contribute to the development of consulting that relates to voluntary biodiversity protection in private forests. Additionally, the project integrates knowledge about social impact assessment of biodiversity protection. A decision support tool is constructed to facilitate the practical monitoring of social impacts. With the aid of the tool it will be possible to find the best approaches and methods for each case of evaluating social and cultural impacts of forest biodiversity.
