Objectives
The project aims at establishing a framework for research and development efforts on forest management methods based on natural disturbance dynamics. Large-scale (700-1000 ha) experimental areas are designated for the purpose and managed for small-scale complexity in terms of within-stand and between-stand variation of the stand structure and composition. Treatments are practiced in terms of selection, gap, and retention cuttings, clearcutting, and various types of thinnings. Forest structure and dynamics, as well as biodiversity attributes (species and habitats), are monitored on temporary and permanent sample plots. Research on the areas on various issues related to the specific management methods will be promoted and coordinated.
