Research project group:
The purpose of the project is to provide research-based information and to develop methods for the assessment of the feasibility of forest management based on selection and gap treatments. The motivation to select such treatments often is the promotion of recreational quality, amenity, or other non-wood benefits. When comparing management alternatives, the basic attributes are timber production and profitability in terms of variable treatment regimes and stand structures.
The principal tool in this project is the Motti simulator. We aim at developing its models and other features to facilitate its application to analyses on various aspects of continuos cover forestry. Development of applications for practical decision support situations is one goal. Basic frameworks for alternative management regimes are drawn up in cooperation with practitioners.
