Metla Project 3503
Assessing quantity, quality and value of wood raw-material for timber trade and procurement
Duration: 2008-2012
Keywords: Sale value, grading, timber assortments, timber measurement, timber quality, timber trade, value added, value chains
Research Programme: Renewing wood product value chains and timber procurement solutions
Objectives
The research project provides new information and develops methods for measurement, grading and assessing value of roundwood. Forestry services for forest resource information and management planning along with the pricing methods of roundwood in timber trade require independent research to secure the availability of raw material, maximize the added value of raw material and to contribute to the fair distribution of its value, according to the added-value principle. Models and methods are needed for the strategic and operative planning of timber trade and wood procurement in order to enable effective decision making. More precise information are demanded concerning roundwood dimensions and quality for roundwood trade and wood procurement, logistics and processing of raw material. The research project includes activities benefiting both forest owners and the different wood purchasers, harvesters and users and contributes to the effective operations at their interface.
