Duration: 2008-2013   Keywords: Norway spruce, Scots pine, cultivated forests, further processing, logs, plywood, sawing, technical properties, thinning wood, value, wood assortments, wood procurement, wood properties, wood quality
Research Programme: Renewing wood product value chains and timber procurement solutions

Objectives

Raw material properties, technical suitability, processing value and economic competitiveness in mechanical wood processing and selected end-use segments of sawn wood and plywood are studied on cultivated Scots pine and Norway spruce available in the short term, and, in particular, in the medium-term in Finland, compared with the raw materials from naturally regenerated forests, for the planning of future’s raw material and product segments and manufacturing technologies in wood product enterprises as well as estimating the formation of stumpage income and developing forestry instruction activities for forest owners. In parallel, scenarios will be constructed on the distributions for dimensions and grades of pine and spruce logs in the domestic wood procurement, based on the data on the prospective development of wood resources; here, economic cutting potential and alternative wood assortment targets and the causes of and results from the changes will be analysed from the viewpoint of wood using industries, as well. In addition, the specific properties and different value components of pine raw materials in Finland and Scandinavian countries that are interesting in the further processing for customer-matched wood products are compiled, processed and transferred from the research for the development platform of information materials for marketing planning and argumentation, and supporting tools for log procurement and product and technology development. Two doctoral theses will be finalised in the course of the project: “Selected end-use related properties improving competitiveness of Nordic Scots pine in mechanical wood processing pine” and “Scots pine thinning wood as raw material for wood products industry”.
