Duration: 2008-2010   Keywords: Forest machinery, accessories, equipment, peatlands, profitability
Research Programme: Renewing wood product value chains and timber procurement solutions

Objectives

Seasonal variation in employment is one of the problems in forest harvesting. It burdens the economy of capital-intensive business, causes problems in timber procurement and impedes recruiting and permanence of skilled labour. Effects of seasonal variation culminate in harvesting of specific stands like peatlands and thinnings of spruce, harvesting of which has been based on winter. Climate change increases the effects of seasonal variation.

Possibilities to rationalize use of machinery with equipment and accessories is studied in the project. Machine equipment (f.ex. special tracks) is mainly connected with base machine as accessories are more related to specific works. Accessories are f.ex. different devices for energy wood harvesting and silvicultural works (ground preparation, seeding, planting, clearing). Goals of the project is to increase operation time of sensitive stand, to secure machine capacity, rationalize the use of machinery and improve profitability of machine entrepreneurship.
