Research Programme: Renewing wood product value chains and timber procurement solutions

Objectives

The three-year-long (2008–2012) sub-project 1 is focused, firstly, on the properties and competitiveness of new or modified wood products, components, structures and structural solutions. Secondly, we study the possibilities of modern science and technology to enhance the quality and value of today’s wood products. In addition to the traditional sawn and rotary cut products, special emphasis is set on products that can be manufactured of small diameter or poor quality timber. Information is produced from novel products, structures and systems concerning their • technical properties • technical competitiveness • economical competitiveness.

The one-year-long (2008) sub-project 2 consists of a preliminary investigation of research needs in the field of environmental performance of wood and wood products in construction and furnishing. Also funding applications for further studies are prepared during year 2008.

The results of the two sub-projects will • positively contribute to the investment decisions of the wood product industries • increase the competitiveness of the domestic industries in comparison to the foreign companies • support the traditional, and open new markets for wood products and wood based solutions in comparison to the competing construction and furnishing materials.
