Objectives

The use of logging residues as a source of energy is rapidly increasing. However, the impacts of the recovery of logging residue and stumps are still inadequately understood in many respects. The objective of this project is to produce information for application in the field as fast as possible on the impacts of the utilization of forest-based energy, especially that to be obtained from removed stumps, on habitat factors, on the environment in general, and on restocking.

The project is planned to be implemented in three geographical areas in the form of an intensive study: Southern Finland, Central Finland, and Northern Finland. The study will examine the impact of stump removal and collecting of logging residue on the nutrient cycle, microbiology, restocking, carbon balance, and vegetational succession. All the earlier measured data that is available from ongoing projects will be applied in order to obtain first results as soon as possible. The work will be done in close co-operation with UPM-Kymmene, which is one of the leading companies in the utilization of forest bioenergy. Moreover, cooperation with various universities will play a significant role in the project.

The results of the project will be of benefit to forestry organisations and political decision-makers in connection with decisions involving the recovery of forest-based energy. The project will produce scientific and other publications, and the results obtained will be made know to practical forestry through seminars, excursions and other presentations.
