Duration: 2007-2011   Keywords: direct seeding, extension, fungal damage, insect damage, integrated control, planting, quality control, regeneration, seed production, seedlings production, site preparation
Research project group: Forest regeneration and sapling stand management

Objectives

The project aims to find new measures to improve the quality of seed and seedling production as well as planting performance of seedlings by means of charting the practical operation chain and by investigating problems, bottle necks and holes of knowledge in five sub projects and extension service:
  1. The seed crop of Norway spruce and Scots pine will be predicted with models based on weather factors. The aim of the work is to help the planning of seed collection activities and the decision-making process of forest regeneration.
  2. Ensuring the supply of seed orchard seed the subproject aims to test and search for methods of integrated control against cone- and seed insects and pathogens and improve the possibilities of the seed producers to anticipate the damages to cone- and seed crops.
  3. Seed quality will be improved by harmonization of seed testing rules and developing methods for improving correlation between laboratory and field germination and developing reliable seed pre-treatment methods for Norway spruce as well as by maturation of seeds in relation to cone collection date with special emphasis on storability of the material.
  4. The quality of nursery crops are improved by investigating the epidemiology of problematic pests, including seedborne fungi, oomycetes, Thelephora, snow molds and weeds, and their effect on nursery seedlings and their control from seedling production to their establishment after planting.
  5. The risk factors and their significance in different seedling delivery chains from nursery to planting site are investigated and the aim is to find the best seedling delivery chains for operational environment.
  6. Planting performance is improved by matching seedling material, site preparation and planting date on different sites.
  7. Direct seeding methods of Scots pine will be developed by investigating the effects of micro site preparation, sowing date, stand collected (source identified) seed/seed orchard (qualified) seed on performance and early growth of seedlings, and seeding and planting of Scots pine, Norway spruce and silver birch will be compared as a method to regenerate fertile site types.
  8. Extension service is responsible for publishing Taimiuutiset newsletter (in Finnish) and it has also its own homepage for informing about coming courses, seminars and other relevant events.
