Metla Project 3448
New solutions for treatment and harvesting of peatland forest
Duration: 2007-2011
Keywords: harvesting cost, harvesting potential, peatland forests, timber harvesting
Research Programme: Production forestry in drained peatlands
Objectives
The growth of peatland forests have been succesfully increased with long-time investing in silviculture. However, only less than one third of the growth is currently utilized. The project aims to find new treatment and harvesting solutions for effective and economically viable utilization of peatland forests. Detailed information of harvesting conditions and potential is gathered. Harvesting sites are classified according to harvesting costs to obtain realistic future harvesting potential. The project also includes studying new harvesting methods and techniques and their effect on forest growth and income.
The project is funded by Finnish Forest Research Institute and partners in co-operation are Metsäteho, Metsäkeskus Etelä-Pohjanmaa and Metsäliitto Osuuskunta.
