Metla Project 3443
Improvement of management of young stands
Duration: 2007-2009
Keywords: management of young stands, mechanization, operational efficiency
Research Programme: Cost-efficiency and quality in silvicultural operations
Objectives
This project consists of five sub-studies, which have been considered important for the future development of management of young stands. The titles for the sub-studies are: 1) Analysis of the emergence of understorey vegetation after tending 2) Reliability of pre-operation estimation of time consumption in young stands 3) Improvement of the method for estimation of the effect of timing of pre-commercial thinning on the consumption of working time 4) Production economics of lift-off cleaning 5) Emergence of natural broadleaves on stump-harvested areas In addition to the sub-studies, a wrap-up will be done to evaluate the best management practices for stand establishment and management of young stands order to create good quality production forests. Both silvicultural and production-economic standpoints are considered for the evaluation.
