Metla Project 3428
National Forest Inventory Designs and Methods
Duration: 2006-2010
Keywords: error estimation, estimation, land use, land use changes, national forest inventory, sampling design, satellite images
Research project group: Distinct projects - Information reserves on forestry and the forest environment
Objectives
The forest inventory research began in Finland in the beginning of the 20th century. This research project continues the methodological development. It includes the research and planning of field sampling design, development of the models as well as the research and development of methods for computing the inventory results both from pure field data and from combined field data and remote sensing data. The methods are applied in the Finnish national forest inventory, and are available in the inventories of the other countries world-wide. The project produces and publishes forest resource information for municipality level using multi-source information, as well as covering thematic map form predictions. Sub-project 1 develops methods for UN LULUCF greenhouse gas reporting and takes care of the practical reporting including the requirements of Kyoto protocol.
