Objectives

The results of this project help to form a profound understanding of the effects of internationalisation of forest sector on wood markets and sawmilling industry in Finland and give insights into future market development in a changing environment. Market environment of the forest industry is facing both internal and external structural change due to international economic integration. The future development of the Finnish (European) roundwood market depends strongly on the role and timing of foreign investments in forest industry production in Eastern Europe. For the future of the Finnish forest sector, it is important to know what strategic decisions companies have done in international markets and how these decisions have affected their economic performance. Project includes also a limited section regarding investments in pulp and paper industry in wherever they have elementary linkages to sawmilling business and roundwood markets. In the feasibility part of the study, information needs on the development of international roundwood markets and their effects on domestic wood prices have been clarified in order to formulate this research plan, preliminary analyses on Finnish, Estonian and Lithuanian roundwood prices have been conducted, data sources have been evaluated and research network in Finland and abroad developed.
