Metla Project 3420
Protection areas and rural vitality
Duration: 2005-2009
Keywords: Nature tourism, nature conservation areas, recreational use of nature, rural development, rural enterprise
Research Programme: Safeguarding forest biodiversity - policy instruments and socio-economic impacts
Objectives
The project aims to identify those characteristics of conservation areas that serve to give each area its attractiveness to visitors, and to establish what additional services visitors demand to encourage them to return to the same areas. The interaction between the conservation areas and their visitors with the localities in which they are located will be examined in order to establish to what extent communities adjacent to conservation areas are able to benefit, via entrepreneurial activities, from the visitor flows and the demands that the conservation areas create.
