Duration: 2005   Keywords: Canopy interception, climate, ditch network maintenance, ground water, hydrology, peatland forests, precipitation

Objectives

This preliminary study aims at preparing a five-year study on the effects of regional climatic variation and tree stand interception and transpiration on the water balance of drained peatland forests. This information is necessary in order to assess the estimated need of ditch network maintenance operations in Finland and develop better management practices for peatland forests. During year 2005, co-operating research bodies outside of Metla will be contacted. The necessary experimental design, the instrumentation, as well as the ecological and climatic variables subject to monitoring will be determined. Peatland forest areas proper for field experiments will be searched from different climatic conditions. By the end of year 2005 a research plan to be submitted to Metla concerning years 2006 – 2010 will be completed. An application closely connected to this issue has been submitted to the Finnish Academy on 14.5.2004.
