Metla Project 3397

Forest and mire vegetation as indicators of environmental change - pilotstudy

[  Suomeksi  |  Objectives  |  Project leader  |  Researchers  |  Publications  |  Metla Research  ]

Duration: 2004-2006   Keywords: biodiversity, environmental changes, forest vegetation, niche, peatland vegetation, site
Research project group: Distinct projects 1 - Structure and function of forest ecosystems

Objectives

The aim is to produce information on understorey vegetation as an indicator of the state and changes of forest and peatland ecosystems as well as environmental factors. The project will 1) interpret observed vegetation changes in Finland since the 1950’s, 2) produce information on responses of plant species and communities along ecological gradients and their indicator values, and 3) develop methods and applications which improve possibilities to use vegetation data as an indicator of its environment. Four approaches will be used: species on a site, communities on a site, species in a community and species and communities in space and time. The results can be utilized in improving site type classification and in assessing biodiversity and state of environment.
