Metla Project 3373
Heavy metal deposition and bioindicators
Duration: 2003-2008
Keywords: bioindicators, deposition, heavy metals , mosses, platinum group metals, precious metals, reference materials
Research project group: Distinct projects - Information reserves on forestry and the forest environment
Objectives
The heavy metal load on the environment in Finland has been surveyed at the national level using forest mosses in 1985, 1990, 1995 and 2000. The main moss species collected is Hylocomium splendens and when it is absent, Pleurozium schreberi. The emission sources of heavy metals, the areas affected by the emission and the temporal variation in deposition are presented by using maps based on the heavy metal concentrations of moss samples. The emissions of precious metals (Pd, Pt, Rh) from catalytic converters of motor vehicles are also studied using bioindicator samples. Analytical methods for the determination of precious metals in environmental samples are developed.
