Duration: 2003   Keywords: countries with economies in transition, enlargement of EU, forest policy, integration of EU, international forestry, market economy, sustainable forestry

Objectives

Research and development plan for the international forestry will be developed based on the description of the professorship, information needs identified in the analysis made by the Research Centre of the Finnish Forest Research Institute and Faculty of forestry of the University of Joensuu in 2001, and research interests of the nominated professor.

Professorship in international forestry is focussing on forestry in Russia and countries with economies in transition from a viewpoint of EU and other international development. Main information needs in the forest industry, small and medium sized enterprises and in the ministries identified in the analysis are forest resources and forest management in Russia and countries with economies in transition, wood import and timber trade as well as protection of biodiversity in the neighbouring areas. Research interests are related to forest resources, their development and sustainable use, impacts of EU enlargement on the forest sector and impacts of international processes, such as United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, on the forest sector.

Starting from the description of the professorship, information needs of the stakeholders and research interests, activities can be divided into two parts that support each other, that is research and development activities. Research activities concentrate on providing research findings, while development component would further process research findings to format suitable for the end-users of the information. Research component would include actual research projects, while development component would provide services and products for the end-users of research results, for example information services in the internet.

Research and development planning would take into account already ongoing activities and know-how, other ongoing and planned activities in the Finnish Forest Research Institute and elsewhere, in order to avoid duplication of work and to find possibilities for co-operation.
