[  Suomeksi  |  Objectives  |  Results  |  Project leader  |  Researchers  |  Publications  |  Metla Research  ]

Duration: 2002-2007   Keywords: birch, bucking, curly birch, further processing, imported timber, sawing, small-sized timber
Research Programme: Potentials for the utilisation of roundwood and wood raw materials in relation to the wood product markets

Objectives

The objective of this project is to enhance and modernise the hardwood utilisation, saw milling and further processing of sawn wood, in particular. New information will be produced of all the principal raw material sources (final cutting stands, thinning stands, imported timber), focussing to the timber and wood properties, as well as the different wood processing techniques. Both basic research and applied research will be carried out in order to find good uses and effective wood processing chains for the limited but valuable hardwood raw materials. The project consists of two sub-projects.

Sub-project 1

Sub-project 2

Results

Extensive report on the properties and utilisation of birch thinning wood for furniture industries was published in 10/03 (Finnish Forest Research Institute, Research Paper 899, In Finnish). Planning and financing of two new sub-projects was also succesfully carried out during 2003. Both sub-projects are closely related to pruning and quality growing of silver birch.
