Metla Project 3340
Nutrient dynamics and management of forested mineral soils
Duration: 2002-2008
Keywords: ash, bioenergy, biomass, fertilisation, forest yield, liming, litter, logging residues, mineralisation, nutrient cycling, nutrients, roots, weathering
Research project group: Distinct projects 1 - Structure and function of forest ecosystems
Objectives
The objective is to provide information about the ecological basis of forest management for sustainable forest production.
Especially, the objectives are to determine- soil properties in upland forest soils, factors and processes affecting them, nutrient and biomass dynamics and their significance in the functioning of forest ecosystems, and nutrient budgets in different stands (site type, tree species, climate, managed/natural, disturbed/undisturbed) (sub project 1)
- effects of forest management (fast- and slow-release fertilizers, wood ash fertilization, liming, soil preparation, prescribed burning, harvesting and slash removal) on soil properties, stand nutrient status, growth and nutrient dynamics, and the maintenance of soil fertility in intensively managed stands (sub project 2).
