Metla Project 3313

Effects of dense mixed seedling stands on the nutrient status of the groundwater

[  Suomeksi  |  Objectives  |  Project leader  |  Researchers  |  Publications  |  Metla Research  ]

Duration: 2001-2006   Keywords: forest regeneration , groundwater, initial seedling development, protection of water ecosystem, site preparation, soil biology
Research project group: Distinct projects 1 - Structure and function of forest ecosystems

Objectives

The objective of the project is to develop environmentally gentle methods for a forestry practice compliant with the actual silvicultural recommendations and investigate the possibilities to reduce soil disturbance and nutrient leakage especially to groundwater. In the old groundwater fields the aim is to follow how long time the nutrient leaching into the groundwater takes and to determine whether the nutrient status of the groundwater returns to its pre-felling level before canopy closure. The forestry practice will be provided with knowledge how quickly a dense, preferably mixed, stand compliant with the new silvicultural recommendations can be established and what this means in regard to leaching of nutrients.
