Forest sertification and sustainable forestry in Russian Karelia

Objectives
The aim of the study is to analyze what are the key questions of forest certification in Russian Karelia. The aim is to search answers to the questions raised at the end market of forest products about usage forests and the principles of forest management.
"What is the level of environmental acceptability of the imported wood todays?" and "What are the main assumptions laid out at the end markets of forest products to the forest management?" are typical examples today. The criteria and indicators of ecological sustainability are combined to the economic and social situation at the local level. The comparison of different forest management approaches will be done to find the basics of sustainable forestry and especially the basics for forest certification.
The knowledge about the ecological, social, and economic effects of forestry will be processed to working guidelines and habits of practical forest organisations. This study is part of a large international research and development project Taiga Model Forest.
