Decision support system for stand management

Objectives

The main objectives of the project are 1) to develop methods to assess the reliability of growth models applied in growth simulation system, and 2) to develop the decision support tool for stand management.

The methods will be developed to study the effects of errors related to simulation data, as well as the errors of individual models on the simulation results. Goal is to improve the ability to assess the overall reliability of simulation results. The performance and reliability of growth and yield models applied in the simulation of stand development will also be studied by comparing the simulation results against empirical data collected from repeatedly measured experimental stands.

The decision support system is intended to be applicable in evaluating the effects of alternative silvicultural practices on stand growth and yield, technical quality of trees, as well as the profitability of forest production on stand-level. The system will include stand simulator based on individual-tree growth models, and optimization system to select the optimal treatment schedule under the given goals and constraints.

The tree model Lignum will be equipped with a visualization component that renders images of the main Finnish tree species. Visualization component will be included in the decisiojn support system. Satistical models of the architectural structure of th main tree species are constructed for this component and they are implemented in Lignum. In addition to these activies, results of the model Lignum are reported.
