Metla Project 3274

Conservation of genetic resources and the register of forest genetic material

[  Suomeksi  |  Objectives  |  Project leader  |  Researchers  |  Publications  |  Metla Research  ]

Duration: 2000-2001   Keywords: forest genetic register, genetic conservation
Research Programme: Forest tree breeding

Objectives

The project puts into operation the Finnish genetic conservation strategy for forests as well as takes care of the Finnish share of the international responsibilities in the field of forest gene conservation. In addition to the practical steps such as genetic inventories, selecting gene reserve forests and establishing ex situ-collections, spread of information will have a major role in the activities.

Forest genetic register with its 190 000 entries insures that all essential information of tree breeding material as well as other types of genetic material, is stored and accurately kept for various needs in the present and in the future. The register will also provide information that is needed for the control of the trade of forestation material,eg. the descriptors for basic material.
