Metla Project 3265
Growth, yield, and stand dynamics on drained peatlands
Duration: 1999-2003
Keywords: Betula pubescens, Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, competition, forest drainage , growth model, mortality, peatlands, stand structure, thinning
Research Program: Ecologically and economically sustainable forestry on drained peatlands
Objectives
The project aims to produce Models for stand simulators to describe biological processes growth, mortality) and the effect of stand management (ditch network maintenance, thinning) on tree growth and stand-level growth dynamics (changes in stand structure). Management guide-lines for practical forestry to economically optimize timber production in peatland stands.
Results
In 2000, a probability model predicting the need for ditch network maintenance in peatland sites was constructed and applied to the MELA and Motti growth simulators.
2002: Individual-tree mortality models for Scots pine and pubescent birch constructed in 2001 were incorporated in the MOTTI stand simulator. A model predicting the growth response of pine stands to ditch network maintenance was incorporated as a part of the MOTTI stand simulator.
