Metla Project 3240
Monitoring of forest resources
Duration: 1998-2005
Keywords: forest resources, inventory, monitoring
Research Programme: National Forest Inventory
Objectives
The objective of the project is to produce information on forest resources, health of forests and biodiversity of forests at national and regional level. The forest resource information includes area of forests by different categories, volume of growing stock, increment, structure of growing stock and forests, and drain.
Results
The 9th National Forest Inventory (NFI9) of Finland was started in 1996. By the end of 2002, the field work has covered South Finland and a part of North Finland. In the areas surveyed so far, the total volume of growing stock has increased from the previous inventory. The total volume of growing stock has exceeded 2 billion cubic meters. The information is based on the NFI9 in South Finland (1996 - 2000) and on the NFI8 in North Finland (1992 - 1994).
