Objectives

The research project consists of an international research programme "Nordic Research Programme on Social Sustainability of Forestry" and of a research project focusing on social sustainability of forestry in Finland.

The aim of the Nordic research programme is to collect and disseminate information about social forestry research in the Nordic countries, the Baltic countries and in Northwest Russia, to support post-graduate students studying social aspects of forestry and to promote multidisciplinary cooperation between researchers, students and practical forestry professionals. The information produced by the research programme can be utilised in solving problems connected to social sustainability of forestry.

The aim of the research project focusing on social sustainability of forestry in Finland is to clarify the contents of social sustainability and to study the possibilities to promote and measure it at community level. Research themes include the concepts of sustainable development and socially sustainable forestry, role of forestry from the point of view of social objectives of sustainable development, objectives of forest utilisation from the points of view of different interest groups, forest policy tools to promote social objectives of forestry, and monitoring and information systems dealing with social forest-related changes.
