Tavoitteet

The aim of Experiment 1 is to investigate the genetic variation in ozone sensitivity of six different commercially important clones of Norway spruce. The aim of Experiment 2 is to establish the relationship between ozone dose and growth of one half sib family and 3 clones of birch in order to improve the Level I Critical level and to move from Level I to Level II. The following questions will be answered 1) what is the dose - response relation-ship for the effects of ozone on birch? 2) how large is the difference in sensitivity between different clones? 3) is the present critical level for ozone (Level I, i.e. to protect the most sensitive forest tree species) valid for birch? and 4) based on answers to 1)-3) what is the economic impact of ozone on birch in Fennoscandia, today and in the future (Level II)? The aims of Experiment 3 are 1) to test if plant strategy can be related to individual plant response and plant community response to ozone and nitrogen. 2) to assess the importance of ozone exposure dynamics in order to address the knowledge gaps that are relevant for the critical level work to save the biodiversity of ecosystems.
