Effects of abiotic and biotic factors on metabolism, growth and allocation of growth in forest trees at tree and forest stand level

Objectives

The aim of the project is to study the effects of various abiotic and biotic environmental factors on growth, allocation and canopy structure and on photosynthesis and related biochemical reactions in Scots pine, Norway spruce and silver birch. The environmental factors studied include light, nutrient availability, atmospheric carbon dioxide and ozone concentrations, herbivory and leaf pathogens.

The project is divided in five subprojects: Subproject 1: Growth of silver birch at elevated levels of carbon dioxide and ozone: adaptations in photosynthesis, injuries and protection by ascorbate and terpenes; Subproject 2: Effects of nutrient availability and light on metabolism, growth and allocation of growth in forest trees; Subproject 3: Effects of climate change on metabolism, growth and allocation of growth in forest trees; Subproject 4: Estimation of leaf area index of coniferous stands using canopy radiation models and remote sensing; Subproject 5: Effect of increased CO2 and O3 on the host-pathogen interaction in birch (Betula pendula) leaves.

The subprojects are realized in collaboration with several national and foreign collaborators and research groups from different organizations. The project has received external funding from Academy of Finland, EU ERBIC15CT980102, Maj and Tor Nessling Foundation and Metsämiesten Säätiö Foundation.
