Research Programme: Forest Regeneration in Southern Finland

Results

Models were constructed for the description and simulation of the development of mixed and pure young pine, spruce, and birch stands, advance growth, and pine stands with green tree retention. The models were incorporated into the Young Stand Simulation System constructed in co-operation with the Department of Forest Ecology at the University of Helsinki and the Metsäteho Company. Alternative management regimes were examined and evaluated with the models. A revised set of the regeneration models for the Mela and Motti systems was produced for inclusion and testing in the simulation environment.

Major review and synthesis papers and handbooks for practical forest managers were published on - Influence and regulation of site factors in the regeneration of drained peatlands - Regeneration and treatment of young stands in profitable forest management - Utilization of advance regeneration in forest regeneration - Green tree retention in pine stands - Alternative management regimes for young spruce stand in Southern Finland - Successful forest regeneration

The basic biological factors and processes, objectives, results and success criteria, techniques, economy, and other aspects of regeneration and the management of young stands were addressed in terms of experimental, modeling and simulation, and other approaches. Results of the projects were utilized in the construction process of the Finland's National Forest Program. Studies on the silviculture and management of Scots pine forests in Europe and plantation forests in Eastern and Southern Africa were conducted in terms of international projects.
