Research project 1994-97

The purpose of the research project is to compare the impact of conflicting forest-related values and interests ("forestry conflicts") on the transformation of forest policies and on the use of forest resources in six Western countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, France and USA) during 1984-1995. The project will produce updated information on a previous study of forestry conflicts in the same six countries (Hellström, E. & Reunala, A. 1995).

The material for the research is based on a total of about180 interviews of specialists and representatives of relevant interest groups within the case study countries. The material will be analyzed using Charles Ragin's method of Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), to which a hermeneutic approach will be developed within this project.

The research project is a joint venture of the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) and the European Forest Institute

Hellström, E. & Reunala, A. 1995. Forestry Conflicts from the 1950s to 1983. A Review of a Comparative Study between USA, Germany, France, Sweden, Finland and Norway. European Forest Institute Research Report 3. 92 p.
