Duration: 1992-1997   Keywords: birch, hardwoods, harvesting, regeneration, timber quality

Objectives

The aim of the research project is:

- to study the effects of the admixture of broadleaved trees on wood production in conifer-dominated stands - to study the meaning and value of broadleaved trees for biodiversity and multiple use of forestry - to develop growth models for structurally different mixed stands - to develop alternative silvicultural methods

Researchers in 1996:

Erkki Lähde - forest structure, mixed stands, forest diversity, natural regeneration Olavi Laiho - soil science, forest pathology, stand structure, mycorrhizas Yrjö Norokorpi - air pollutants, forest ecology, forest regeneration, northern Finland Timo Saksa - regeneration, stand structure, forest mensuration Matti Oikarinen - forest mensuration, regeneration, fertilization, biological soil amelioration, biophoton research
