The Statistical Yearbook of Forestry, with all the figures and tables in Finnish and English, provides a statistical overview of the Finnish forest sector. Chapter 12 of the Yearbook sets out major international forest statistics, produced by organisations such as the UN-ECE and FAO. Forest Finland in Brief offers a concise description of Finnish forestry and forest industries.
Metla acts as a focal point responsible for Finnish replies to regular statistical enquiries originating from the UN-ECE, FAO, ITTO and Eurostat. Annual questionnaires cover topics such as the following: removals, production of forest industry products, roundwood prices, and international trade in forest-related products. In the 1990s, Metla carried out two projects to improve international roundwood price statistics. In 2001, Metla, together with Skogsstyrelsen of Sweden, initiated a project to re-introduce the sub-division Logs/pulpwood in international trade statistics.
Since 1996, Metla's experts have been involved in the development of Eurostat's forest statistics.
Metla is active in forest statistical collaboration with the Baltic and Nordic countries. Since 1999, nine annual meetings of Baltic-Nordic Forest Statisticians (BNFSG) have been organised. In 2003, the BNFSG convened in Finland (12 December). The mission of these meetings is to exchange knowledge and experiences, and to explore possibilities for forest statistical co-operation in the Baltic Sea Region.
