Abstract: The Office National des Forets (ONF, French
National Forestry Office) is in charge of French state and community
forests, which are under multipurpose management aimed at fulfilling
ecological, economic and social requirements. A preliminary approach
to sustainable forest management is proposed, based on the experiences
of the ONF at the regional level. A total of 23 indicators are
proposed for 6 management criteria (forest structure, health and
yield, biodiversity, and protection and socioeconomic functions
of forests), of which a much smaller number would be suitable
for use in practice.
