Abstract: The article presents examples of recent developments
in the social objectives, policy tools and monitoring of forestry
in Finland in relation to international sustainability discussion.
To start with, the social objectives of global, European and Finnish
forestry agreements are shortly summarised. The main part of the
article describes practical forest policy tools which are divided
into juridical-administrative regulation, public planning, economic
instruments, information policies and negotiative instruments.
Monitoring developments are illustrated by describing the Finnish
criteria and indicators of sustainable forestry, opinion polls
concerning forestry and the National outdoor recreation demand
and supply assessment. The article is concluded by discussing
some of the main topics in wider international context.
