Joensuu Forestry Networking Week 2009: Connecting Young European Experts
Topic 2009 Fighting climate change: adapting forest policy and forest management in Europe.
Joensuu, Finland: 24.5.-29.5.2009
The Joensuu Forestry Networking Week is a new initiative connecting and increasing the interaction between young and experienced scientists, professionals and stakeholders in forestry from different parts of Europe. The Joensuu Forestry Networking Week is bringing together people working in research, education, consultancy and business; forest owners and forest managers; representatives of forest-based industries, as well as policy- and other decision makers.
The Joensuu Forestry Networking Week 2009 aims to promote and to enhance discussions on science and policy in the field of climate change and forestry for decision making on the role of forests by combating and mitigating the expected change. The UN Climate Change Conference 2007 in Indonesia adopted the Bali roadmap charting the course for a new negotiation process to be concluded by 2009. The process contributes to the Copenhagen conference 2009 and leads to post 2012 international agreement on climate change. Some of the decisions are linked to forestry, but what could and should be the role of forestry in adapting to and mitigating climate change? The Joensuu Forestry Networking Week 2009 discusses these issues from the viewpoint of forest science and other scientific disciplines, with a special focus on forest policy and forest management. The development of and priorities for actions at the local, national and European level are taken into account, as well as the regional differences in Europe.
The Joensuu Forestry Networking Week 2009 is organized in co-operation with the COST Action: Expected Climate Change and Options for European Silviculture (ECHOES) jointly by the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla), the European Forest Institute (EFI) and the University of Joensuu.
The Joensuu Forestry Networking Week features timely and important issues connected to forests and the environment with the topics for forthcoming events in 2010 and 2011: “Forests and Waters” and “Forests and Energy”. Both topics were raised as the most important forestry issues of the coming years by the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE) in Warsaw 2007.
