The mission of Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) is to build the future of the forest sector of Finland by producing and disseminating information and know-how for the well-being of society.

The Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla), Vantaa Research Unit, is looking for a post-doc researcher to work in a multi-disciplinary research project ''Hydro-biogeochemistry of drained peatlands: impacts of bioenergy harvesting on trace metal transport under different hydrogeological settings, (HYPE) funded by the Academy of Finland. The research team consists of scientists from Metla, the University of Helsinki (Dept. of Forest Sciences), the University of Oulu (Dept. of Chemistry), Geological Survey of Finland and Finnish Environment institute

The objective of the project is to increase our knowledge about the impacts of harvesting on the hydro-biogeochemistry of drained peatlands and with particular reference to trace metals (Pb, Cd, Ni, Cu, Zn and especially to Hg).The study will use a "paired catchment" approach and the catchments are located in northern Finland, and whole-tree and stem-only harvesting methods will be compared.

The duties of the selected post-doc researcher will include: development and application of analytical techniques for trace metal speciation (e.g. DET, DGT) as well as chemical speciation modeling (e.g MINEQL+), concentrating especially on the partitioning of free and organically bound forms of trace metals in peat, interstitial and drainage waters. In addition, we propose to link the speciation of trace elements to the hydro-biogeochemistry of the catchments. The researcher is expected to participate field work, application and development of relevant research methods; analysis and scientific reporting of the results; and presentation of the work and results.

The post-doc researcher position will be employed from the beginning of August 2010 to the end of end of July 2013.

The applicant is required to have a PhD in the field of environmental chemistry/biogeochemistry/forest sciences or related area. Knowledge and experiences in applying the methods/techniques described above are regarded as important. The work requires capability to apply new research methods, capability for team work, and flexibility in regard to working times and working in the field.

Salary is based on the incentive system terms set by Metla, with grade 8 (2601,54 €/month) for a post doc researcher depending on the competence of the person. In addition, an incentive part of the salary is paid, which may at the maximum be 50 % of the salary level.
