The fine hardwoods you mention, black walnut, red oak, and white oak, are
completely inappropriate for planting in northern Idaho, primarily because
they would be not cold hardy.  While it is true that there are provenances
of red and white oak from say, Minnesota that could survive, they would
still grow quite slowly, making economic hurdles hard to jump.

Hybrid poplar is difficult to compare to the fine hardwoods above, because
its wood is quite different, and therefore utilized for different products.
Walnut and the oaks have high value for fine veneers, lumber, and furniture
stock; poplar more suitable for pulpwood, OSB, and core stock for plywood.
