A very good article about FORPLAN / Mathematical Programming Models in
Forest Management in Interfaces.

Field, R.C. 1984. National Forest Planning is Promoting US Forest
Service Acceptance of Operations Research. Interfaces 14:5:67-76.

The article mentioned the evolution of FORPLAN from Timber RAM, the role
of FORPLAN in U.S. National Forest Management Act of 1976, challenges in
its implementation and its success. One interesting thing mentioned is,
13 updates of the first version of FORPLAN were released in an effort to
eliminate errors and increase its capabilities. The FORPLAN formulation
is outlined in the appendix as well as comments on Model 1 and Model II
formulations (Model III formulation look for the model of Oscar Garcia
(FOLPI) and/or model of Eldon Gunn). I think every forester, forestry
decision-maker especially those working in forest management should read
this article.
