Dear Forestlist members The New Zealand Institute of Forestry's annual conference is to be held in Wellington, New Zealand on Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 May 1999 with a field trip on Wednesday 5 May. The theme for the NZIF conference is leadership. In the last twelve years the New Zealand forestry sector has undergone significant change and has moved from a government-led to a private sector-led industry. The New Zealand forestry sector has significant potential for export-led growth. However, in the face of an increasing volume of available wood and at a time when significant value-added decisions need to be made, the sector is currently facing difficult trading conditions. Many of the NZIF members are concerned that the sector is now more diffuse, and may be lacking the necessary leadership and/or strategic goals, to enable forestry to appropriately deal with these issues and maximise its potential. A good programme of speakers for the two day conference is currently being arranged. Forestlist members (especially from overseas who may be in New Zealand at the time of the conference) are welcome to contact me for further details. Registration will not be sought until early in 1999 - the purpose of this message is to provide an early announcement.
