Old growth definitions, plus

A couple of weeks ago I put out an email request for definitions of old
growth, climax, virgin, pristine, etc. forests. Several people asked me
to share what I findt. I have started a paper on the subject and will
be working on it off and on for the next 6 months or so. You may view
what I have assembled thus far at
http://home.att.net/~gklund/pristine.html

You may also see what we have assembled on definitions of forest,
deforestation, afforestation and reforestation at
http://home.att.net/~gklund/DEPpaper.html. This effort will probably
continue for another month or so.

My thanks to all those that have contributed to these efforts. Please
contact me if you have any additional published or official definitions
that should be included in either document.

Lastly, I may be doing a short paper on the definition of "low forest
cover" for IUFRO. There are several interpretations of this - ranging
from (1) lands covered with shrubby trees to (2) lands classed as open
forests to (3) countries with a low percentage of their lands covered by
forests or a (4) combination thereof. In the case of option 2, a
discussion of the rationale why countries chose a certain crown cover
threshold for classifying lands as forest and the threshold for defining
closed forest.

If you have any thoughts on this subject, please contact me.

Please share as appropriate. Thanks, Gyde
